How to Choose a Good Connected Car Receiver

Okay, before you decide to buy an after-market stereo system, there are many things you need to consider. The first is, whether you need a single din or a two-din receiver.

You can theoretically install a double din receiver into a single din space, but it isn’t easy. You’ll want to consult a good stereo technician for advice before you buy it.

The vast majority of larger, touch-screen receivers are double din, but if you have a single din installed as original factory equipment, then be on the lookout for single din receivers.

Consider how you will use the receiver

If you are a fan of satellite radio for example, then be sure that your receiver is built to connect to Serious XM.

If you own an Android Phone rather than an Apple Phone you csn use both Apple Car Play and Android Auto, but not every receiver is built to support Android Auto. So if that’s the service you want, be sure it’s built into the receiver.

USB Ports

Almost all receivers have at least one USB port and some have two. Enabling two people to listen to tracks you have recorded on your phone or iPad simultaneously.

But regardless of whether the unit has one or two USB units, as well as charging capabilities, USB Ports are important.

Also, pay attention to where the USB ports are located. Otherwise, you might have a tangled mess of wires.

CD or DVD Player?

Do you still have boxes of CD’s you refuse to give up? Then you’ll need a CD Player.
On the other hand, if the kids in the back seat need to watch StarWars for the 15th Time, then make sure you get a unit with a DVD player.

Is the touchscreen clear, and adjustable to the lighting conditions?

Many people love their receiver when it’s night but practically give up using them during the day because of the glare. On the other hand, at night, the unit is so bright it practically engulfs the car.

Make sure that there are controls to adjust the dimness or brightness.

Problems with Android Auto Play

Apple Carplay seems to be a more stable system because there are few complaints about it, but there are enough complaints about Android AutoPlay that you want to make sure their system works flawlessly.

Our closing advice

Even if you can install the Apple carplay stereo yourself, and know positively the receiver will work in your car, or if you need a harness kit to make it work, we recommend choosing around three choices, and then go to a good stereo installation shop or two.

Tell them you’re considering buying a receiver for your car, and give them the names and model numbers of each model you are considering.

Since they installed dozens of similar units, they get all the feedback as to which receivers are good, and wish to pass on.

You may hear a mouthful from various installers, but they know the ropes. Don’t rely on the advice of a stereo salesman to steer you to the right unit.
